The Yellowjackets star shared that her son will be born with a cleft lip and/or cleft palate in a TikTok yesterday, telling fans it was a “shocking” realization.

“It doesn’t run in my family. It doesn’t run in my husband’s family,” said Hanratty, who is married to post-production assistant Christian DeAnda. “The biggest thing that we all want is we want our kids to be happy and we want our kids to be healthy, and finding out that so soon in our son’s life he’s going to be getting surgeries done… it’s still scary to think that your precious little baby is going to be going under anesthesia and that there’s gonna be difficulties.”

A cleft lip occurs when the tissue of a baby’s upper lip doesn’t join together completely prior to birth, leaving an opening or cleft, according to the CDC. Similarly, a cleft palate happens when the tissue of the palate (the roof of your mouth) doesn’t join together before birth. About 1 in 1,050 babies in the US is born with cleft lip, either with or without cleft palate, and the conditions can be diagnosed during pregnancy via routine ultrasounds — which is presumably how Hanratty received the diagnosis.

Cleft lip and cleft palate can both be treated via surgery, which is recommended within the first 12 to 18 months of birth, and Hanratty said she has already met with specialists. “I’m very, very excited that we’re in such beautiful, wonderful hands,” the star said in the TikTok.

Still, Hanratty was honest about how the news affected her. “I’m already preparing for the fact that I will not be able to nurse,” said the expecting mom, adding that she plans to pump and use formula. According to the Cleft Lip and Palate Association, infants with cleft lip may be able to breastfeed, but might have difficulties forming a seal between the breast and lip. Hanratty added that she’s “praying” her son is born with only cleft lip, as cleft palate requires more surgeries and “more difficulties when it comes to closing things up… but we’re prepared for either way.”

“It’s been emotional,” Hanratty admitted, “but I think that both me and my husband are at peace with the fact that we know he’s going to be OK.” The actress added that she’s also “in a really fortunate place to have some of the best care” and to have “so many people in our family who are in the medical field. This was just a little bit of different journey than what we had expected.”

Hanratty ended the video on a positive note, with a shoutout to her growing little one. “Any time I get a little sad or a little scared he kicks me and reminds me that he’s fine and that he’s gonna be OK,” she said with a smile.

Shailene Woodley Says Traumas & PTSD Contributed to Health Scare: ‘Everything I Ate Hurt My Stomach' https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/3103783/shailene-woodley-couldnt-walk-illness/ https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/3103783/shailene-woodley-couldnt-walk-illness/#respond Tue, 24 Sep 2024 21:03:37 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=3103783 Shailene Woodley is speaking out about the debilitating health issues she experienced in her twenties and how doing intense mental and spiritual work helped her find her way back to wellness.

In an appearance on the SHE MD podcast, Woodley shared some of the scary symptoms she dealt with even as her young career was taking off. “I was losing my hearing,” she recalled. “I couldn’t walk for longer than five minutes at a time without having to lay down for hours and hours and hours and sleep. Everything I ate hurt my stomach.”

While Woodley declined to reveal the cause of the symptoms, she said the illness sent her from doctor to doctor without getting a diagnosis. “It was this conflation of issues and diagnoses and different doctors telling me different things,” the Three Women actor explained, adding that she sought help from medical doctors as well as holistic practitioners.

“I’ve always eaten very healthy and I’m very athletic and so it was a confusing process for me,” Woodley went on. “Why am I passing out every month when I get my period? Why am I hypothyroid? All of these things.”

Woodley recalled that the medical issues were leading to other issues, such as with body image. “If everything I’m eating hurts my stomach, I’m now suddenly afraid of food,” Woodley remembered thinking. She also experienced “body dysmorphia and confusion of identity,” all of which, she said had to do with an inability to “feel safe in my own capsule, in my own skin.”

It took a decade of “unwinding and healing and getting healthy,” the Divergent actor went on, for her to find her way back from the health scare. While the specific medical issues “physically resolved” themselves, Woodley also credits her healing to a lot of inner work. “It forced me to really take a deep look and become introspective,” Woodley explains. The mental side of the healing process involved “looking at real traumas and real PTSD that I had experienced,” she said. “They definitely took a toll on my body and took a toll emotionally.”

Woodley is alluding to the connection between physical and mental health, which we’ve only recently begun to fully appreciate. Per the UK’s Mental Health Foundation, people with mental health problems like depression are “more likely to have a preventable physical health condition such as heart disease.” Depression can also come with physical symptoms like headaches, fatigue, and digestive issues, while anxiety can lead to stomach upset and insomnia.

Stress also affects physical health in a very real way. Higher-than-normal levels of cortisol, the hormone that regulates your body’s stress response, can lead to inflammation, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar, per Mayo Clinic.

Woodley explained that she’d been in a state of fight or flight — a well-known reaction to stress — for years, which may have affected her physical health. Describing that headspace, Woodley said she was “constantly approaching every single moment with high alert and with red flags because I hadn’t yet established what a calm nervous system could look like and what true safety in myself could look like.”

For the actor, healing started in a mental and spiritual place. It involved “truly working on my trauma and … acknowledging that I’ve never really felt safe with myself or with anyone else because I never knew that I could be safe, that that was an option,” she said. “Diving into the mental health aspects of that and then therapy and a lot of discipline has been my path and my journey to healing.”

Demi Moore Detailed the Severe Postpartum Workouts She Did Because of the Societal ‘Pressure' https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/3101926/demi-moore-biking-60-miles-day/ https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/3101926/demi-moore-biking-60-miles-day/#respond Sun, 22 Sep 2024 20:12:06 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=3101926 We’ve heard some heartbreaking things about how women feel pressure to bounce back after welcoming a baby. We’ve heard the societal pressures of women feeling the need to lose weight right away, and in recent years, many women, including celebrities, have clapped back at that notion. However, Demi Moore just gave insight into the harsh way she tried to put her body into the way it was before kids, which included biking 60 miles a day. (Yes, you read that right, 60 miles a day.)

In a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning, the Substance actress talked about how she felt so much pressure to lose weight right away after giving birth, and she went to rather extreme measures to do so.

“I put so much pressure on myself,” Moore recalled. “I did have experiences of being told to lose weight. And all of those, while they may have been embarrassing and humiliating, it’s what I did to myself because of that.”

She discussed how she biked 60 miles a day while filming the movie Indecent Proposal. She’d bike from her home to the set, which was 30 miles to there.

“I think she was, like, five or six months old when we were shooting [Indecent Proposal]. So, I was feeding her through the night, getting up in the dark with a trainer, with headlamp, biking all the way to Paramount, wherever, even on location where we were shooting; then shooting a full day, which is usually a 12-hour day; and then starting all over again,” she said. “Even just the idea of, like, what I did to my body, it’s, like, so crazy, so ridiculous.”

It’s so heartbreaking that so many women feel the need to do so, but we do love that women are being more vulnerable, more open about their experiences. We’re heartbroken that Moore had to go through that, but she’s made it clear that she’s living her best life now (and we seriously love to hear that).

For those who don’t know, Moore and her ex husband Bruce Willis welcomed three daughters named Rumer Glenn, born in 1988, Scout LaRue, born in 1991, and Tallulah Belle, born in 1994.

These celebrity moms have been body-shamed during their pregnancies.

Sharon Stone’s Bikini Video Gives a Super-Rare Glimpse Into Her Workout Routine https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/3096959/sharon-stone-bikini-workout-routine/ https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/3096959/sharon-stone-bikini-workout-routine/#respond Sat, 14 Sep 2024 16:27:11 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=3096959 In case you missed it, Sharon Stone’s gorgeous bikini video shows a glimpse into her workout routine!

On Sept 12, Stone shared a video of herself doing a bit of her workout in her pool. She shared the video with the caption reading, “Just finished my last workout with Coach @kristinemarie_18 before I go film NOBODY 2 with @therealbobodenkirk. So excited ❤️.”

In the video, we see Stone come out of the pool in a triangular, black, and olive striped bikini that perfectly shows off her toned physique. She’s also wearing ankle weights as a part of her workout routine (and don’t forget her dog, who is so excited to see his mom)!

Stone shouted out coach Kristine Marie, who seemingly helped her with her pool workout routine.

Not only do we see a stunning bikini video from her, but we also see a glimpse into her workout routine. Stone has been more focused on her health and workout routine now than ever.

“I don’t choose to make growing older a negative. I choose to get older. Growing older is my goal … I was in an ICU for nine days and the survival rate for what I went through is very low. I don’t need someone to make me feel bad about growing older. I’ll tell you what makes you feel bad: when you think you might not,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “I work for it. I work at everything. To me, discipline is a kind of freedom.”

Per Good Housekeeping, she even uses the bathtub for water workouts by doing leg lifts in the bathtub with water resistance.

Also, in a previous interview via MSN, Stone shared that self-confidence is key to maintaining her confidence. “You feel more attractive, even sexier than before, because you’re at ease,” she explained, “You’re less consumed by the nagging thought, ‘Do I look good?’ You already know you do,” she said.

Jennie Garth Says Co-Stars' Early Deaths 'Drive Me' to Stay Active After Hip Replacements https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/3095913/jennie-garth-hip-replacement-costar-deaths/ https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/3095913/jennie-garth-hip-replacement-costar-deaths/#respond Thu, 12 Sep 2024 20:54:21 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=3095913 Jennie Garth has battled health issues over the years, from a leaky heart valve to osteoarthritis to two hip replacements, as she revealed in an as-told-to essay in Self today. Yet Garth remains dedicated to staying healthy and strong — inspired, in part, by the early deaths of some of her famous co-stars.

“Having several of my cast mates pass away at such early ages really drives me to stay super active and do everything in my power to remain healthy,” Garth told the outlet. “Listen to and respect your body, because this is the body we came into the world with and it’s the body we’re going to grow old with—and we have to take care of it.”

90210 original cast members like Luke Perry and Shannen Doherty have passed away in recent years, with Perry suffering a fatal stroke in 2019 and Doherty passing away in July of this year after a long battle with cancer. Perry was 52 and Doherty 53.

“I was in shock because we all knew that Shannen was fighting cancer for a long time, but, I don’t know, there was just something about her. She was such a fighter and a pro,” Garth told Today shortly after Doherty’s death. “I just didn’t think that would happen, for some reason.” On an episode of her podcast, I Choose Me, Garth added that she thought of Perry immediately after Doherty’s death. “I just know — this is going to sound very weird — but he definitely was there to catch her,” she said. “I thought how happy he was going to be to be with her again.”

Garth’s own health struggles included two hip replacements, her left hip in 2020 and her right in March 2024, brought on by arthritis. “The whole experience was, and still is, so discouraging,” Garth told Self of the second procedure, which “took a lot longer” to heal, she explained. “I haven’t had this second hip that long, and I really have to baby it.”

As she recovered, Garth prioritized getting back into the gym. “I noticed that moving my body helped boost my mood and prevent my joints from stiffening,” she said, adding that not being able to exercise “really wore on my mental health.” She slowly started getting back into workouts a month after the surgery, limping at first. “I had to honor my body, listen to it, and take things slower.”

Ultimately, Garth says the surgeries have helped feel more grateful towards her body and physical abilities, while finding strength from sharing her workouts online and opening up about her surgeries publicly. “I get a lot of positive responses from people that I’m helping them,” she said, adding that it makes it worth it to be vulnerable on places like her podcast. She’s also used that medium to process her grief for Doherty and Perry, whose memories continue to motivate her.

“People put off taking care of themselves at all costs until they just can’t put it off anymore,” she stated. “When something hurts, go to a doctor and do whatever you can to alleviate the pain because you don’t have to live in pain.”

Garth’s taken on stigma before, making a point of speaking honestly about menopause, IVF, and now joint replacement and grief. Hopefully her openness can help the rest of us navigate the (inevitable!) up and downs of mental and physical health as they come.

For the Last Time, No, ‘Post-Birth’ Abortion Is Not a Thing https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/3094705/trump-post-birth-abortion-comments-false/ https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/3094705/trump-post-birth-abortion-comments-false/#respond Wed, 11 Sep 2024 17:56:54 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=3094705

A debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump was bound to be chaotic, but when the two presidential candidates squared up for the first time last night, the conversation definitely went in directions we couldn’t have predicted. Trump made outrageous statements about immigrants eating pets (?) in Ohio (??) and confidently said he holds “the most incredible rallies in the history of politics.” However, we know all too well that Trump’s claims can be as dangerous as they are laughable, sowing misinformation designed to confuse and sway voters. So one ridiculous claim we have to debunk is his repeated assertion that Democrats support “post-birth” abortions.

Trump’s comments came after a question from moderator Linsey Davis, who cited Trump’s waffling stance on abortion — he’s gone from bragging he was the “most pro-life president ever” to stating that a six-week abortion ban is too short, to changing his mind and saying he would support a six-week abortion ban. “Vice President Harris says that women shouldn’t trust you on the issue of abortion because you’ve changed your position so many times,” Davis stated. “Therefore, why should they trust you?”

In response, Trump talked about “abortion[s] in the ninth month” and the former governor of Virginia, pediatric neurologist Ralph Northam, whose comments on caring for an infant born with fatal complications led to controversy in 2019. (“The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired. And then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother,” Northam said at the time. In later comments, he explained that as a pediatrician, he’s counseled families in difficult situations and accused of Republicans of using those situations to score political points, per NPR.)

“He said the baby will be born and we will decide what to do with the baby,” Trump said in the debate. “In other words, we’ll execute the baby.” He said that his support (for now!) of the six-week abortion ban stemmed from how “radical” the Democrats are about abortions. “[Harris’s] vice presidential pick says abortion in the ninth month is absolutely fine,” Trump went on, referring to vice presidential nominee Tim Walz. “He also says execution after birth, it’s execution, no longer abortion, because the baby is born, is okay. And that’s not okay with me.” Walz has never made such comments, per the Minnesota Star Tribune.

Davis, the moderator, responded simply. “There is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a baby after it’s born,” she said.

She’s right (of course!), because a “post-birth” abortion would be infanticide, which, yes, again, is illegal. “Claims of abortions occurring “moments before birth” or even “after birth” are false,” KFF reported earlier this year. “These scenarios do not occur, nor are they legal in the United States.” So why are Republicans using them as a talking point?

By going back and forth on abortion, Trump is trying to straddle the line. He’s looking to appease the anti-abortion coalition in his base without alienating more moderate voters who support abortion. Republicans know that abortion is a bad issue for them. They’ve cemented themselves as the anti-abortion party in a country where 63 percent of adults believe it should be legal in all or most cases, per a Pew Research Center poll earlier this year. Trying to paint Democrats as the “radical” ones around abortion seems like their way of justifying their backwards stance on the issue.

And, for the record, not only do “post-birth” abortions not happen (again, that would be infanticide!), but even later abortions are rare. Pew Research Center found that 93 percent of abortions occur during the first trimester, with just 1 percent taking place after 21 weeks. A 2022 report in Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health found that third-trimester abortions are “substantially more expensive [and] difficult to obtain” than first-trimester abortions, and usually only occur due to “new information about the pregnancy” like serious fetal health issues or even belatedly learning of the pregnancy; or due to barriers that prevented an earlier abortion, such as cost, stigma, and lack of provider.

In other words, late abortions typically only occur under exceptional circumstances. Abortions that happen after birth? Not. A. Thing.

Trump went on to avoid questions about whether he would veto a national abortion ban, which Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance has said would happen. (Vance himself, though, is personally opposed to abortion.) “I won’t have to,” Trump said, asserting that Congress would never be able to pass a national abortion ban, though he stated in a March radio interview that a 15-week national abortion ban would be “very reasonable.” He later noted, weirdly, that he “didn’t discuss” the major topic with his running made. “JD — I don’t mind if he has a certain view… but I really didn’t [speak with him].”

For her part, Harris took the opportunity to slam Trump’s comments. “Nowhere in America is a woman carrying a pregnancy to term and asking for an abortion,” Harris said. “That is not happening. It’s insulting to the women of America.” She stated that she supports “reinstating the protections of Roe v. Wade” while detailing the “unconscionable” effects of the abortion bans now in place across the country. “The majority of Americans believe in a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body,” she concluded.

Abortion care is healthcare and needs to be protected — and that includes debunking all the deliberately dangerous misinformation around it.

Kate Middleton Shares 'Relief' as She Finishes 'Incredibly Tough' Chemotherapy Treatment https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/3092930/kate-middleton-cancer-finished-chemotherapy/ https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/3092930/kate-middleton-cancer-finished-chemotherapy/#respond Mon, 09 Sep 2024 17:23:04 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=3092930 Kate Middleton is moving into a new phase of her health journey. The Princess of Wales announced in a statement (and sweet video) that she’s officially finished with chemotherapy after an “incredibly tough” last few months.

“As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment,” Kate wrote in the statement posted to social media, which she also read aloud to accompany the video. “The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown.”

Kate revealed her cancer diagnosis in March following an abdominal surgery in January. In a statement, she said her doctors believed her condition was non-cancerous until post-surgery tests revealed otherwise. “My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy,” Kate said in a video posted to social media on March 22. The Palace hasn’t specified what kind of cancer Kate has.

The announcement came after weeks of speculation around Kate’s wellbeing and even her relationship with Prince William, which quieted down (at least to some extent) after she revealed her diagnosis. Still, the hardest part was ahead for Middleton, who then underwent a daunting course of chemotherapy treatment.

For the first time, she opened up about what that experience was like in the new statement and video. “The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you,” Kate explained. “It also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before.” She went on to speak about the “new perspective” her diagnosis gave her on “the simple yet important things in life… simply loving and being loved.”

The accompanying video provided an emotional backdrop to Kate’s news, giving a rare, intimate look at how the family — including children George, Charlotte, and Louis — spend their time. There was even a few moments of sweet PDA between Kate and Prince William.

And while Kate says she’ll now be taking on “a few more public engagements,” she noted that “doing what I can to stay cancer free is now my focus.” She may be done with chemotherapy, but “my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes,” the Princess wrote.

Closing out her statement, Kate thanked the public for their support. “William and I… have drawn great strength from all those who are helping us at this time,” she said. “Everyone’s kindness, empathy and compassion has been truly humbling.”

How Mariska Hargitay Stepped in to Help Investigate ‘Over 11,000’ Unsolved Sexual Assault Cases https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/3082682/mariska-hargitay-rape-kits/ https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/3082682/mariska-hargitay-rape-kits/#respond Sun, 18 Aug 2024 18:00:00 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=3082682 Warning: This post contains descriptions of sexual violence.

Both on and off screen, Mariska Hargitay is a champion of women. While many know her as the iconic Olivia Benson in Law & Order: SVU, she’s also someone who helps what’s right.

The podcast Dateline True Crime Weekly recently talked about how Hargitay funded prosecutor Kym Worthy’s biggest mission: to solve rape cases after she discovered that over 11,000 untested rape kits sitting on a shelf in a police evidence room. That’s right, read it again: there were over 11,000 untested rape kits.

For those who don’t know, rape kits are a vital tool to help gather evidence following a sexual assault. Per Helping Survivors, they’re used to collect the victim’s clothes, head hair, pubic hair, blood, and anything under the nails. It all gathers this to help the victim find justice.

And over 11,000 were untested, but Hargitay helped raise money to help undo this major infraction of justice.

“They found 22 serial rapists among these kits and they needed money for this effort so who stepped in? None other than Law & Order’s Mariska Hargitay,” podcast host Andrea Canning told the Today show via Entertainment Weekly. “She helped them raise the money to get this done and it’s having a ripple effect across the country. It’s making changes everywhere, from police departments to prosecutors’ offices.”

This is truly an amazing thing that Hargitay, Worthy, and all the people who helped this issue be solved.

Mariska Hargitay

Hargitay has opened up in the past about her own sexual assault story in an essay written for People.

“He was a friend. Then he wasn’t. I tried all the ways I knew to get out of it. I tried to make jokes, to be charming, to set a boundary, to reason, to say no. He grabbed me by the arms and held me down. I was terrified,” Hargitay wrote. “I didn’t want it to escalate to violence. I now know it was already sexual violence, but I was afraid he would become physically violent. I went into freeze mode, a common trauma response when there is no option to escape. I checked out of my body.”

She added, “I removed it from my narrative. I now have so much empathy for the part of me that made that choice because that part got me through it. It never happened. Now I honor that part: I did what I had to do to survive. For a long time, I focused on creating a foundation to help survivors of abuse and sexual violence heal. I was building Joyful Heart on the outside so I could do the work on the inside.”

The spray represents the first needle-free emergency treatment for potentially fatal allergic reactions, the FDA said in its announcement. “The availability of epinephrine nasal spray may reduce barriers to rapid treatment of anaphylaxis,” Dr. Kelly Stone, associate director of the division of pulmonology, allergy and critical care in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in the FDA statement. “As a result, neffy provides an important treatment option and addresses an unmet need.”

Specifically, Neffy has been approved to treat Type I Allergic Reactions in adults and children who weigh 66 pounds or more. That includes anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction that occurs when the body is exposed to an allergen and goes into shock, according to Mayo Clinic. Anaphylaxis must be treated immediately, ideally with epinephrine (aka adrenaline) and a follow-up trip to the emergency room.

The EpiPen and EpiPen Jr. (for kids), auto-injectors that contain epinephrine, were previously the only treatments available to decrease these kinds of severe allergic reactions. EpiPens inject epinephrine directly into the muscle, using a needle that many people (especially kids) find frightening and even traumatic, according to many patient and parent testimonies during the FDA’s expert advisory panel meeting on Neffy last May.

“This approval marks a watershed moment in addressing an unmet medical need for people with Type I allergies — a treatment alternative that avoids the need to inject epinephrine with a needle, which can be fraught with anxiety and fear for many,” Richard Lowenthal, co-founder, president, and CEO of ARS Pharmaceuticals, said in the company’s statement.

Research has confirmed that EpiPens are underused. A 2011 study of over 14,600 patients with EpiPens found that only 11 percent refilled their EpiPen prescription “consistently at all expected refill times.” A subsequent 2021 survey on EpiPen underuse found that caregivers are often hesitant to use the injector for a number of reasons, including their own fear of the child’s reaction (about 29 percent), and the child’s fears or nerves around the needle (about 4 percent). Many patients and parents may find an epinephrine nasal spray more convenient and less frightening to use.

Neffy was originally slated for an approval decision last June, after its expert advisory panel voted to recommend the FDA approve the medication. The FDA extended its deadline to September to allow for discussions of “labeling and post-marketing requirements,” according to a June press release from ARS. Post-marketing requirements typically refer to “activities after FDA approval of a product to generate additional data about a product’s safety, efficacy or optimal use,” an ARS spokesperson told Allergic Living at the time.

Then, in September, the FDA announced it had rejected Neffy, citing the need for another study on the drug, per a statement at the time — a request ARS Pharmaceuticals announced it would appeal.

Now approved, the FDA says it analyzed four studies to make its ultimate decision. Results from the studies, which looked at 175 health adults without anaphylaxis, “showed comparable epinephrine blood concentrations between neffy and approved epinephrine injection products,” the FDA noted. A study of the medication in children showed that epinephrine concentrations were similar to those of adults who’d taken Neffy.

Neffy should be available within eight weeks, according to ARS Pharmaceuticals’ statement. As a next step, the brand says it will also seek approval for use in children from 15 to 33 kilograms (33 to 66 pounds).

Colin Farrell Shared a Rare Look at Life With His Son With Angelman Syndrome: ‘I’m Proud of Him Every Day' https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/3078495/colin-farrell-son-james-angelman-syndrome/ https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/3078495/colin-farrell-son-james-angelman-syndrome/#respond Wed, 07 Aug 2024 19:29:12 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=3078495 Colin Farrell is giving fans a look into how he cares for his 20-year-old son, James, who has a rare neuro-genetic disorder called Angelman Syndrome.

In a People cover story and video feature, Farrell opened up about James’ symptoms and diagnosis as well as what life is like for him now as a young adult — and how his son has inspired him to start the Colin Farrell Foundation, launched this month, to help people with disabilities and their families.

“I’m proud of him every day,” Farrell said of James. “I just think he’s magic.”

The first signs of James’ condition came early on, although Farrell said he didn’t initially recognize them for what they were. As a baby, he was very quiet, which Farrell thought meant he’d “hit the lottery: I have a chill child who’s not gonna keep me up at night!”

As James got older, he wasn’t hitting language or movement benchmarks typical of babies his age, including the ability to sit up on his own or crawl. “We knew that something was up, [like] developmental delays,” Farrell said.

James, whom Farrell shares with ex Kim Bordenave, was initially diagnosed with cerebral palsy at age one — a “common misdiagnosis” at the time, Farrell says. A year later, though, a pediatric neurologist noticed other telltale symptoms, like frequent outbursts of laughter. Blood testing confirmed that James had Angelman syndrome, which is caused by the UBE3A gene not functioning normally, according to the Angelman Syndrome Foundation.

Other symptoms of the condition include developmental delays, sleep problems, lack of speech, and seizures, which James also experienced. “I’ve been in the back of ambulances, I’ve been in the hospital with him,” Farrell said. “Thankfully he hasn’t had one in 10 or 11 years.” His current symptoms, Farrell says, include being nonverbal and some struggles with “balance [and a] jerky gait.”

When James will turn 21 in September, Farrell said he’ll age out of many support systems that are fundamental for families of kids with disabilities. “Once your child turns 21, they’re kind of on their own,” he explained. “All the safeguards that are put in place, special ed classes, that all goes away, so you’re left with a young adult who should be an integrated part of our modern society and more often than not is left behind.” (It was likely with similar concerns in mind that Farrell and Bordenave petitioned to be James’ co-conservators in 2021.)

Now, Farrell hopes to make a difference through the Colin Farrell Foundation. “For years I’ve wanted to do something in the realm of providing greater opportunities for families who have a child with special needs to receive the support that they deserve… and basically the assistance in all areas of life,” Farrell explained. “I obviously have a certain amount of means, having had a career in film for 20-plus years now, and we still struggle with finding the kind of support that James deserves.”

According to its website, the Foundation will look to address the “lack of affordable and accessible community-based housing and day programs” for those with intellectual disabilities, increase wages for paid caregivers, increase funding for disability-focused Medicaid programs, and establish a camp for those with intellectual disabilities and their families to relax and spend time together.

It’s an ambitious endeavor, but one Farrell clearly believes in deeply, “It’s all because of James. It’s all in James’ honor,” he said. “This is the first time I’ve spoken about it, and obviously the only reason I’m speaking is I can’t ask James if he wants to do this. I mean, I can. I speak to James as if he’s 20 and has perfect fluency with the English language and age-appropriate cognitive ability. But I can’t discern a particular answer from him as to whether he’s comfortable with all this or not, so I have to make a call based on knowing James’s spirit and what kind of young man he is and the goodness that he has in his heart.”

It’s the first time Farrell has talked extensively about James’ life and condition, though he has been a supporter of the disability community for decades. “The struggles of a child with special needs can be so brutal that they can tear at the very fabric of your heart, but the love shared and the pure strength and heroism observed is the needle and thread that mends all tears,” he told Today at an annual summit and gala for Angelman syndrome research in Chicago hosted by the Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics in 2017. He also walked with athletes in the Special Olympics when they were held in Ireland in 2003, per the CFF website.

Still, Farrell is “very private” about his family life and understandably protective of James. “I want the world to be kind to James,” he told People. “I want the world to treat him with kindness and respect.”

He made the decision to open up about their lives as a way to promote the Foundation — and hopefully improve the lives and futures of adults with intellectual disabilities like James. Farrell said, “I choose to believe that if James knew that doing this could help families and could help other children and young adults who live with special needs, James would say, ‘Dad, what are you talking about? Why are you even asking me? It’s a no-brainer.'”
